World Congress on Advancing Sustainable Hydropower

21-24 May 2013, Kuching, Malaysia

The 2013 World Congress on Advancing Sustainable Hydropower, will be held on 21-24 May, in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Delegations from around 100 countries are expected to attend the Congress, which brings together senior representatives of governments, international organizations, public and private sectors, financial institutions and civil society.

The Congress provides an international forum to present and discuss real-world solutions to energy, water and climate challenges, aiming to inform policy, shape action and set future strategy in the hydropower sector.

Convened by the International Hydropower Association, and under the auspices of the host government, previous Congresses have been held in Antalya, Turkey (2007), Reykjavik, Iceland (2009), and Iguassu, Brazil (2011), more information can be found at www.hydropower.org

According to announcements made by the state government of Sarawak in June, plans are underway to build 6,200MW of additional installed power capacity by 2020, of which 80% will be from hydropower. These plans fall under the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy, known as SCORE, which is one of the five regional development corridors being developed in Malaysia.

More broadly, there is exceptional growth in the hydropower sector in Southeast Asia, and at the global level, the deployment of hydropower has been at records levels for several consecutive years.
