Hydropower
The world's largest source of renewable energy
Hydropower is the world's largest source of renewable energy and has an important role to play responding to challenges facing the world because of climate change.
As a clean and renewable energy source, hydropower can help to reduce climate change by cutting our dependence on carbon-based fuels. We call this climate change mitigation.
Hydropower can also help cope with the effects of climate change, by making sure people have access to water for drinking, farming and industry and by protecting people from flooding. We call this climate change adaptation.
You may notice that the IHA website is looking different. This is an interim version of our website that allows us to test new features and functionality before launching an all-new IHA website later this year. While we are working on the interim website, some links and pages may not be available, and other content may have moved. If you find a broken link, or are unable to find some important information, please let us know. We would also be very interested to hear your comments and feedback.
About us
The International Hydropower Association (IHA) works to advance sustainable hydropower.
That means we talk to two main groups of people:
- We talk to governments, organisations, scientists and the general public to explain the benefits of hydropower and how it can work with other renewables.

- We also talk to the hydropower industry, helping to make sure that hydropower is developed and used sustainably.
